What Is My Real Identity?
What is my real identity?
"When you are with yourself you radiate, there is no inadequacy." A.H. Almaas
Your life force is energy emanating out, creating an identifiable aura.
Although people look alike, there is an essence that distinguishes each of us, no one is the same.
By befriending yourself you immediately access your intuition and integrity. You are most clearly seen when your expression is uninterrupted by who you think you should be.
If you reduce yourself to an idea of who you are, you quickly become alienated from your richest resource—your creativity.
Think of your favorite actor—even as they submerge into different roles, you can still identify them. There is a continuous light that beams from character to character, there is some mysterious truth that engages you over and over.
How does identity fit in the business of acting?
In the industry, as an actor, you might sometimes feel like a commodity, a product to be sold. Casting might feel like the opportunity to make that sale.
The buzzword "branding" is a marketing tool adapted by casting agents and business coaches to identity an actor as a type/product.
You might hear brands like: "sweet & sassy," "leading man," "girl next door," "awkward & clueless," "sweet-faced guy who gets kicked around," etc...
When you are what you're selling it can be a delicate balance between your humanity and your commodity; who you are and your marketing identity.
When the business looms and triggers questions like, "who should I be?" get back to work on your acting.
Acting is a means to discover your identity.
Show up for that rehearsal, lock yourself in a studio for an hour and experiment. Explore, awaken, deepen, ripen your pulsing creative desires. All engines on boil!
You gain new strength and build a steady foundation by exercising as an artist.
If you work with compassion, perseverance, and inner guidance you will liberate your essential self and broaden the spectrum of roles you can play.
Then when you show up to play any number of "character," your authenticity consistently shines through.
This is what keeps the audience riveted.
The more you find rootedness in your work, the more selective you can be. Nothing speaks louder, commands more attention, and insists on recognition like your truth.
Don't become submissive... act.
